Do PPI (proton pump inhibitors) Medication Like Nexium & Esomeprazole Cause Vitiligo? My experience

After taking Nexium Control (a proton pump inhibitor for acid reflux/ GERD/ GORD) for 3-4 months, I noticed sensitive skin around my eyes, which later developed into vitiligo; a condition where patches of skin lose pigment creating very visible white patches - which in my opinion was definitely caused by the PPI. (Nexium Control in this case)

Vitiligo is classed as an auto-immune condition, however given that there appears to be a clear trigger (PPI's) for some people (perhaps genetically predisposed) it feels like there is more to it we don't yet understand. Also think the percentage of people affected by the condition after taking PPI's is as-yet an unknown.

This article and survey is intended to try and track the numbers of people with vitiligo who have in the previous 12 months or more taken PPI medication to build some more solid data and stats. Perhaps the stats are negligible and worth the risk for most people - it's as yet an unknown.

If you've noticed small skin pigment changes/ vitiligo after taking PPIs (or if you haven't) please fill in the survey & comment or share your story so we can better understand the data.

I have attached some academic research papers that also show this, although there are many more online if you look for them.

I was certainly never warned about the side-effects. There are other risks associated with Vitiligo it's unknown really what the full impact is of the condition.
